The man drove his 1966 Oldsmobile Dynamic 88 sedan off the right shoulder of the highway, where he struck a metal light pole around 9:22 p.m., officials said. He re-entered the roadway, but again veered right and struck a second metal light pole before crashing into a tree and coming to a stop.
EMS rushed the man to New York-Presbyterian Hospital-Queens in critical condition.
The NYPD’s Highway District's Collision Investigation Squad is still investigating the crash.
