Joseph Barney’s mother brought him to Montefiore Medical Center on the afternoon of June 1 from the family’s apartment on E. 214th Street in Williamsbridge.

The boy was unconscious and unresponsive, with no visible signs of trauma, when he arrived at the hospital. He was later pronounced dead.

Police said Tuesday that his death had been ruled a homicide.

An investigation remains ongoing, police said. No arrests have been reported.

Police told the Daily News on Tuesday that the boy, who had autism, was the victim of battered child abuse syndrome and that he had been repeatedly beaten.

Investigators initially believed the child may have died from malnourishment, as he weighed just 30 pounds, the report said.

His mother and stepfather were questioned for hours following his death last June, according to the Daily News.
