Dion Middleton, 45, faces murder and manslaughter charges for allegedly shooting Raymond Chaluisant in the Bronx’s Mouth Hope neighborhood.
The teenager was shooting a toy gun called “Orbeez” that fires water gel pellets out of a car window when Middleton killed him, according to police.
Middleton, who worked for the New York City Department of Correction for nine years, did not stay on the scene of the crime. He even showed up to work at the NYPD shooting range at Rodman’s Neck later that day, according to James.
The New York Attorney General’s Office is empowered to investigate any incident in which law enforcement agents, including corrections officers, kill someone.
“My office is committed to a thorough and transparent investigation of every case where an officer of the law may have caused a death,” said James. “I offer my sincere condolences to the family of Mr. Chaluisant, and the people of New York have my pledge that we will work to see that justice is served.”
The prosecution will be carried out primarily by the Bronx District Attorney’s Office.
Middleton was arraigned in a Bronx criminal court on Friday. The judge set a $1 million bond.
He faces up to 65 years in prison if found guilty on all counts.
