NEW YORK (1010 WINS) — A 25-year-old Albany man was sentenced to nine to 13 years in prison on Thursday for a Queens drag racing crash that killed a 54-year-old man, according to the Queens District Attorney’s Office.
On Nov. 20, 2020, Alamin Ahmed and Mir Fahmid, both 25, were drag racing drunk in the early hours of the morning following Fhamid’s birthday party in Brooklyn.
Surveillance footage showed the two defendants lining their cars up alongside each other at a red light before racing down Union Turnpike in Kew Gardens at speeds above 90 miles per hour.
The two drivers blew through two red lights before they both T-boned Daniel Crawford, a 54-year-old hospital worker on his way to work, at the intersection of Parsons Boulevard and Union Turnpike.
Crawford was internally decapitated. Emergency responders rushed him to the hospital he worked at, where he was pronounced dead.
Ahmed, whose car was disabled in the crash, was arrested at the scene. His blood alcohol content was measured at .094 — above the legal limit to drive of .08.
Fahmid fled in his car, and was only arrested two years after the crash.
Ahmed pleaded guilty to manslaughter and assault in May. The judge gave him seven years in prison for the assault charge and two to six years for manslaughter.
Fahmid is slated to be sentenced on Aug. 22.
“These men used the streets of Queens as a racetrack with tragic consequences: A healthcare worker going in to start his shift in the midst of the pandemic lost his life,” said Queens DA Melinda Katz. “These two men are being held accountable for their deadly recklessness.”
