NEW YORK (1010 WINS) – Police released surveillance images Wednesday of a man they’re searching for in an attack on an Asian woman at a Manhattan subway station last month.
The 23-year-old woman was exiting a northbound 1 train at the 116th Street station at Broadway in Morningside Heights on the morning of May 12 when she was attacked by the man, police said.
As the woman was passing the man while leaving the train, he swung his walking cane multiple times at her, striking her on the side of the head and hip, according to police.
The woman suffered pain and swelling to her head and hip. She refused medical attention, police said.
The NYPD’s Hate Crimes Task Force is investigating.
The man got on the northbound 1 train after the attack, police said. The NYPD believes he’s about 60 years old. Anyone with information is asked to call Crime Stoppers at 1-800-577-TIPS.
The attack comes amid a rise in anti-Asian hate crimes in the city and nationwide.
A rally calling for action to address the spike in anti-Asian hate crimes was planned at 65 Bayard St. in Manhattan’s Chinatown on Wednesday at 11 a.m.
The rally is in response to an attack on a 55-year-old Asian woman on Bayard Street on Monday.
The man arrested in that attack, Alexander Wright, faces multiple charges, including assault as a hate crime. NYPD Commissioner Dermot Shea said he has been arrested eight times in the past year on charges that include assault and arson. WNBC reported that Wright has been arrested 40 times in all.
