NEW YORK (1010 WINS) — The 13-year-old boy who was shot in the head at a Staten Island playground last week was reportedly brain dead Monday as the search for his shooter continued.

The teen, who has not been publicly identified, was shot Friday afternoon and rushed to Richmond University Medical Center in critical condition.

The 13-year-old was shot at the Dr. Maggie Howard Playground, near the Stapleton Houses on Warren Street and Gordon Street, just before 4 p.m., police and fire officials said.

Police told NBC New York that the shooting happened about a block away from his school, I.S. 49, as he was hanging out with friends. A teen gunman fired two shots from a distance into the group, with one of the bullets striking the teen in the victim, witnesses said.

It remains unclear whether he was the intended target of the shooting or a bystander.

Malcolm Penn, a community activist, told the station that he knows the boy and that the teen had been looking forward to graduating 8th grade next month.

"We're just praying that he pulls through," Penn said. "That's it at this point. Being there for the family and praying he pulls through. Very energetic kid. Just out having fun on a beautiful day like a 13-year-old does."

Police said the gunman is believed to be between the ages of 15 and 18 and around 5 feet, 7 inches tall. An investigation is ongoing.
