NEW YORK (1010 WINS) — A 15-year-old boy was fatally shot in the abdomen a couple of blocks from his high school at a downtown Brooklyn park on Wednesday, police said.

Cops said the shooting happened at McLaughlin Park at Tillary and Jay streets around 1:45 p.m.

The teen was rushed to New York-Presbyterian Brooklyn Methodist Hospital in critical condition and later pronounced dead.

The teen has since been identified by the NYC School Safety Coalition as Unique Smith.

NYPD Chief of Detectives James Essig said at a news conference Wednesday that the victim attended the Brooklyn Laboratory Charter School, located at Jay and Sands streets.

The victim was dismissed from school at 1:30 p.m. due to a scheduled half day, and police said he then made his way toward the park.

Witnesses told police that the boy was sitting on the bench with two girls when two young men, believed to be of school age and both wearing black ski masks, approached. Words were exchanged and a fist fight ensued.

One of the men, described as wearing all black, removed a firearm and fired once at the teen.

The shooter, along with the second man, who was wearing a gray hoodie, fled eastbound on Tillary Street toward Adams Street.
