The fire started on the third floor of the building, spreading throughout the Grand Avenue building after the people inside the apartment where the fire began exited and left the door open, fire officials said.

“The most important thing they can do when you leave the fire department is close the door,” Deputy Fire Chief David Simms said.

Adding to the trouble was a frozen fire hydrant in front of the building due to frigid temperatures.

Nine people were rushed to the hospital, including a pregnant woman and a firefighter, and one resident got out of the building by jumping from a window, FDNY said.
