NEW YORK (1010 WINS) — A 27-year-old man was sentenced to 20 years in prison for fatally stabbing his 19-year-old wife to death in 2019, the Bronx District Attorney’s Office announced on Wednesday.
Ernesto Valerio stabbed Emilsy Calix on Oct. 2, 2019 in a Bronx homeless shelter while their 2-year-old and five-month-old daughters watched.
The couple were in their living quarters at the Help USA Bronx Morris shelter on 171st Street near Morris Avenue by Claremont Park when Valerio attacked.
He stabbed her in the neck with a kitchen knife while their children were present.
Security guards at the shelter later found her body in a bathtub.
“The defendant stabbed his wife in front of their children,” said Bronx District Attorney Darcel Clark. “This vicious attack not only took the life of a 19-year-old woman, but also ripped the two children from their mother and caused trauma to staff working to provide services to the defendant at the shelter where the stabbing occurred.”
Valerio pleaded guilty to manslaughter on Oct. 25, 2022.
The judge sentenced him to five years post-release supervision in addition to his 20-year prison sentence.
