NEW YORK (1010 WINS) — New Yorkers may not be able to make late-night withdrawals at some Chase ATMs throughout the city.

The bank has announced that "several" ATM vestibules will close at the same time as the branches, at 5 p.m. or 6 p.m., "due to rising crime and vagrancy that occurred in these previously 24/7 vestibules."

A Chase spokesperson told PIX 11 that the lockdowns may be temporary, and it's unclear which locations would be affected.

"For the safety of our customers and employees, we may temporarily close some ATMs overnight," the spokesperson said. "We can't confirm how many ATMs are affected because it changes constantly."

Sources told the New York Post in August that banks around the city, including Chase, City National Bank and Citizens branches, were closing their doors overnight to deter homeless people from sleeping in the vestibules — some of whom were using the space as toilets.

"You get a homeless person taking a crap or someone committing a crime, putting a skimmer on the ATM," John Weilbaker, 64, president of NewYorkATM.com told the Post, who has been selling and servicing ATMs for the past two decades. "It gets to be too much work."

Chase Support recognized customers' frustration with the change on Twitter.

"I know this outcome wasn't ideal, but your experience is still very important to us," the account told one customer.
