NEW YORK (1010 WINS) — An Orthodox Jewish man was attacked in Brooklyn on Wednesday afternoon in an incident being investigated as a hate crime, police said.

LISTEN TO 1010 WINS

The victim, 31-year-old Yosef Hershkop, was driving on Montgomery Street in Crown Heights with his 5-year-old son around 4:45 p.m., authorities said.

Hershkop said four men approached his vehicle saying he had hit their car and needed to pay. He asked how much they wanted but the men didn’t respond so he said he’d call 911, according to cops.

One of the men then allegedly punched Hershkop in the face in front of his young son, leaving him with a cut on his lip and a bruise on his face. Hershkop gave them $100 and they fled the scene.

Hershkop was taken to Maimonides Hospital in stable condition. The only description of the assault suspect given is that he was a Black man.

“As you may have heard I was attacked yesterday in my neighborhood of Crown Heights in front of my 5 yr old son,” Hershkop tweeted. “I really appreciate the outpouring of support and care. I am thank G-d back home. I can't discuss much else at this time.”

The incident was also captured on surveillance video and tweeted by the local volunteer Shomrim patrol.

No arrests have been made yet.

Anyone with information in regard to this incident is asked to call the NYPD's Crime Stoppers Hotline at 1-800-577-TIPS (8477).
