NEW YORK (1010 WINS) — A 35-year-old man who allegedly went on a violent crime spree resulting in the death of two people, including a beloved pediatrician, was arrested on Christmas Eve, authorities said Monday.
Roland Codrington was arrested while he was driving the stolen vehicle of one his victims, Bruce Maurice Henry, whose body was found at a Harlem park Friday.
Police discovered Henry’s body with multiple stab wounds around 2:15 a.m. at Marcus Garvey Park in Harlem. The 60-year-old pediatrician was pronounced dead at the scene.
During the course of an investigation into Henry’s murder, police discovered the assailant they were looking for was linked to another murder that occurred on Dec. 19 where just after 1 a.m. in front of 214 Avenue A in the East Village a 51-year-old man, James Cunningham, was found with his neck slashed. He was taken to a nearby hospital and pronounced dead.
Codrington and Cunningham allegedly got into a dispute outside the East Village bar which provoked Codrington, who was with his girlfriend at the time, to stab him just seconds later in an incident that was caught on camera.
Days later, on Dec. 22, Codrington went into a Teddy’s Bar and Grill at 2171 2nd Avenue in the East Village around 11:30 p.m. with a pitbull and a baseball bat.
Cordington had recently been kicked out of the bar and felt disrespected so he allegedly returned to cause trouble. He began to choke a 29-year-old employee with a baseball bat before two other employees, a 35-year-old man and a 31-year-old man, attempted to intervene. Codrington then stabbed the men before fleeing the scene. All three of the victims were injured but survived the attack.
Hours later, Cordington allegedly exchanged words with Henry at Marcus Garvey Park where he went to cool off after the bar attack before murdering the doctor.
Security footage showed Cordington and his girlfriend breaking into Henry’s black Mercedes and driving off in it. Police arrested him the next day.
Codrington, of East Harlem, has 12 prior arrests which go back to 2006. He was arrested this year for auto theft, twice for assault in 2021, and another two times for assault with a weapon in 2017. In 2013, Codrington was arrested for possession of a knife and a knifepoint robbery in 2008. In 2006, he was nabbed for a knife assault.
Cops charged Codrington on Monday with two counts of murder, two counts of attempted murder, one count of assault, and one count of criminal mischief.
