NEW YORK (1010 WINS) — A retired Queens NYPD officer was sentenced to 33 months in prison on Thursday for bribing his former colleagues to send wrecked cars to his tow truck company, according to the Department of Justice.
Michael Perri, a 33-year-old who retired early from the force to run a tow truck business, was bribing two officers who were still active from May 2020 until the trio’s arrests in May 2021.
Former Officers James Davneiro, 44, and Giancarlo Osma, 40, took more than $50,000 in bribes while working at the 107th Precinct in Queens in exchange for directing at least 73 damaged vehicles to Perri.
In doing so, they subverted the NYPD’s Directed Accident Response Program. DARP randomly selects licensed tow truck businesses for officers in order to avoid this exact form of corruption.
Prosecutors estimated Perri’s business made more than $150,000 in the scheme.
“Michael Perri, after retiring from the NYPD, conspired with two police officers to betray their oaths and the public with promises of easy money, and as a result, they have all been sentenced to prison for their corruption,” said U.S. Attorney Breon Peace. “This Office will vigorously investigate and prosecute public servants and their associates who exploit their positions of power for private gain.”
Perri pleaded guilty to conspiring to use interstate facilities to commit bribery in November 2022.
In addition to the almost-three-year sentence, Perri will have to pay a $25,000 fine. He has already handed over $158,000 in forfeiture to the government.
Davneiro was sentenced to a year in jail in March 2023 after pleading guilty to the same charge as Perri. Osma was sentenced to 14 months in April.
