NEW YORK (1010 WINS) -- Tourists ran for cover on Sunday evening after a man opened fire on a street near St. Patrick’s Cathedral during a game of three-card monte.

People were playing the scam game on E. 50th Street, off Madison Avenue, before the gunfire around 6 p.m.

The man lost money and his pricey gold chain. He demanded his property back, but the dealers wouldn’t give it up. He then fired a shot at their red Mercedes-Benz C300 before fleeing in a black BMW, police said.

No one was struck, but the gunfire caused panic and sent people scattering, with one tourist calling it "terrifying."

NYPD Chief of Department Kenneth Corey said Monday that police know who they’re looking for.

“The suspect in this case has multiple prior arrests in gun-related crimes—including for shooting people—and yet remains free, carrying a gun and now firing shots in Midtown Manhattan in the middle of the day,” Corey said.

Detectives were checking surveillance video in the area as the investigation continued.

The shooting capped a weekend of gun violence in the city. More than a dozen people were shot, at least six fatally.

Among the dead were a 51-year-old man shot in the lobby of a building on Wortman Avenue in East New York and a 42-year-old man killed when five people were shot on the Coney Island Boardwalk. A 44-year-old woman was also fatally shot in the dead while attending a party in East New York.

“Of course, we’re worried. Of course, we’re scared. Of course, we’re frightened,” said Elena, a Coney Island resident.

Despite the violence, shooting incidents still appear to be down 11% compared to this point in 2021, according to NYPD statistics.
