Investigation launched after multiple fires erupt in Central Park in 2nd time this month

NEW YORK (1010 WINS) — Officials have launched an investigation after several small fires broke out in Central Park from Sunday afternoon into early Monday — in the second possible arson incident since earlier this month.

The FDNY said the first call was at 2:10 p.m. for fires at the north end of Central Park at Powell Boulevard and Central Park North.

Engine 58 arrived on the scene and discovered five separate fires, with the Parks Department and the NYPD also present. Fire officials said Fire Marshals were notified.

Additional fires were reported and responded to near the Central Park Boathouse at East 72nd Street at 2:38 a.m. on Monday, as well as a brush fire near West Drive and West 73rd Street at 2:55 a.m., according to the FDNY.

Fire officials said the fires were fires were eventually extinguished and are under investigation by Fire Marshals and the NYPD.

According to The New York Post, officials believe someone started the fires, but it's unclear if it's the same person or people who started several brush fires around the park on March 8.
