LI man found dead in sunken SUV after driving through Queens park, plunging into East River

NEW YORK (1010 WINS/WCBS 880) -- A 24-year-old Long Island man was found dead in a sunken BMW after he through a Queens park, crashed through a fence and plunged into the East River, police said Monday.

The cause of Sunday morning's crash is still under investigation, but police said the driver of a white 2021 SUV entered Rainey Park at 34th Avenue and Vernon Boulevard in Astoria at 3:30 a.m. Sunday.

Once inside the park, he drove the SUV westbound towards the East River.

The SUV crashed through a fence, hurtled into the water and sank to the bottom of the East River, police said.

NYPD Harbor units recovered the vehicle about 17 hours later, around 8:30 p.m. Sunday.

The man was still inside the sunken vehicle, police said. EMS pronounced him dead at the scene.

He was identified Monday as Martins Gonzales, of Centereach in Suffolk County.

There were no passengers in the vehicle and no one in the park was injured, according to police.
