NEW YORK (1010 WINS) – Dr. Rochelle Walensky, the director of the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, spoke with 1010 WINS on Thursday about everything from the origins of the coronavirus to vaccine booster shots and Memorial Day travel.
With renewed focus on the origins of the virus, Walensky said officials have poured over an initial World Health Organization report and are “really looking forward to another report that is quite a bit more transparent in the data, so we can really get a better line of sight.”
“We’re hoping to have more information, as (President Joe Biden) requested, in the next 90 days,” she said.
Going into the Memorial Day weekend, Walensky said she’s hopeful people will continue to follow health officials' advice and get vaccinated.
And while there were spikes in cases after past holidays during the pandemic, Walensky said, “we’ve never had 50% of adults vaccinated in this country, which is such an exciting place to be.”
Asked if people might need vaccine boosters sooner than previously thought, Walensky said data shows that vaccines offer protection for at least six months but that officials are watching immunity closely.
“We don’t want to be caught by surprise. And so we’re doing all the science now, the legwork now, to really understand how long that immunity lasts, so if we should need a booster, we are ready,” she said.
