The victim, 35-year-old Nathaniel Rivers, was outside with his wife near E. 205th Street and Decatur Avenue in the Norwood section around 1:15 p.m. when a man came up and stabbed him in the chest.

The attack was unprovoked, and the two didn't have any interaction before it, WABC reported.

Rivers' wife tried to stop the stabber by hitting him in the head with a crowbar, according to the Daily News, which reported she wasn't injured.

EMS rushed Rivers to St. Barnabas Hospital, but he couldn’t be saved.

Within hours, police had arrested Franklin Mesa on charges of murder, manslaughter and criminal possession of a weapon.

Police haven’t indicated any potential motive for the stabbing. The victim reportedly knew his attacker from the neighborhood. Police told the Daily News that the suspect is emotionally disturbed.

Rivers and Mesa both lived on Decatur Avenue, about a 10-minute walk away from each other. The stabbing scene was less than a block from Mesa’s listed address.
