Man, 71, fatally shoots self behind police station in NJ: officials

NEWTON, N.J. (WCBS 880) -- A 71-year-old man died after he fatally shot himself in the head behind a New Jersey police station on Friday, officials said.

The man was found just before 1:30 p.m. by an officer near the rear door of the station located at Trinity Street, Newton police said.

A 9mm handgun was found beneath the man.

He was rushed to an area hospital but died, officials said.

According to a spokesman, the man walked up toward the building just before the shooting and had not been at the police station to conduct business nor had he been in custody.
