NEW YORK (1010 WINS) — A food courier arriving at John F. Kennedy International Airport was arrested Sunday after federal agents discovered fentanyl filled candles in the goods he was importing, Customs and Border Patrol announced Wednesday.
Eulalio Gomez-Zuniga, a U.S. citizen, presented bags of food to CBP agriculture specialists for inspection after arriving on a flight from Mexico City, according to officials.
When the customs agents X-rayed his bags, they saw three cylindrical objects, which were later discovered to be cylindrical glass candles.
After probing the candles, they found white power in each that tested positive for fentanyl.
“The fentanyl seized was 73% pure, and capable of causing considerable overdoses in our community,” Said Francis Russo, the director of CBP’s New York field operations.
Authorities claim to have recovered about 2.5 pounds of fentanyl with an estimated street value of $60,000.
Gomez-Zuniga was arrested and turned over to the NYPD for prosecution.
