Man, 23, charged with DWI after fatal crash causes car to fall off Major Deegan Expressway

NEW YORK (1010 WINS) — A 23-year-old man was arrested after his car allegedly collided into another vehicle, killing the driver and causing their car to fall off the Major Deegan Expressway in the Bronx early Sunday.

Police said officers responded to a 911 call at around 4:47 a.m. of a vehicle collison in the vicinity of East 135th and the Third Avenue Brigde.

Upon arrival, officers found an overturned Jeep Wrangler with a the sole occupant inside. He was unconscious and unresponsive at the time.

EMS also responded and later pronounced the man deceased at the scene.

Cops said a preliminary investigation has determined that the Jeep Wrangler driver was merging onto the southbound lanes of the Major Deegan from East 135th Street when it collided with an Audi A6, traveling southbound on the Expressway.

The impact caused the Jeep to strike a concrete barrier on the right side of the road and plummet off the Expressway and onto East 135th Street below, landing on its roof.

Cops said the Audi driver, Freddy Martinez, remained at the scene and was was transported to NYC Health + Hospitals/Lincoln in stable condition, where he was taken into custody.

The Bronx native was charged with driving while intoxicated and driving while ability impaired from alcohol.

Police said victim's identity has not been released pending proper family notification. The NYPD's Highway Collision Investigation Squad is investigating.
