The incident happened at the Gun Hill Road subway station around 4:30 p.m. when officers stopped the man for fare evasion, cops said.

Instead of taking criminal enforcement action, the officers tried to eject the man from the station at which point he punched one of them, police said.

The suspect fled the scene while the officer was transported to Westchester Square Mall Medical Center for pain, swelling and bruising, officials said.

Anyone with information in regard to this incident is asked to call the NYPD's Crime Stoppers Hotline at 1-800-577-TIPS (8477).
