NEW YORK (1010 WINS) — A man was sentenced to 25 years in state prison for the unprovoked slashing of a French tourist's throat in Harlem two years ago, Manhattan District Attorney Alvin Bragg announced Wednesday.

Khalief Young, 29, was found guilty in December of one count of second-degree attempted murder and one count of first-degree assault after the brutal Valentine's Day attack in 2020.

Prosecutors said the 28-year-old victim flew to New York City to visit his girlfriend over Valentine's Day weekend. The couple ate breakfast at a Harlem restaurant on Feb. 14, 2020, then left and walked hand-in-hand down Adam Clayton Powell Boulevard.

Young, a Harlem resident, followed them for several feet and then suddenly attacked the victim from behind, slashing him on the neck from the ear to the middle of his throat.

He fled to his grandmother's apartment building before returning home, and he was arrested three days later.

Prosecutors said the man was taken to NYC Health + Hospitals/Harlem, where he was treated for a 15-centimeter laceration and had a tracheotomy. He was in the intensive care unit for ten days and needed a medical care team to fly back home with him.

"This unconscionable attack nearly took the life of a young man visiting Manhattan for what should have been a joyous occasion," Bragg said in a statement. "Everyone deserves to walk the streets of New York City safely, and I commend the immense strength of this victim, who recovered from this attack and returned to Manhattan to testify."
