NEW YORK (1010 WINS) – Police shot and wounded a man on Staten Island Friday night after he came at them with a metal pipe, the NYPD said.
Two uniformed officers responded to a 911 call about an "emotionally disturbed" man at an apartment building on Malden Place, near Falcon Avenue, in the Oakwood neighborhood just after 10:30 p.m.
When the officers arrived, they encountered a 45-year-old man inside his apartment on the second floor, NYPD Deputy Chief Charles McEvoy said at an early morning press conference Saturday.
The officers tried to speak to the man, who was “acting erratically,” McEvoy said.
After several minutes, they were able to take him to an ambulance outside. But as he was being treated by EMS, he left the ambulance, pushing his way past the officers and running back to his second-floor apartment, according to police.
“The officers followed him inside, where he was able to pick up a 2 ½ foot pipe, which he began to swing at the officers,” McEvoy said.
One of the officers discharged his service weapon, striking the man in the torso, according to police.
EMS quickly rendered aid to the man, and he was transported to Staten Island University Hospital North, where he underwent surgery and was listed in stable condition.
Both officers were also taken to the hospital for a medical evaluation.
The NYPD released a photo showing the pipe the man allegedly had.
