NEW YORK (WCBS 880) — The NYPD's Hate Crimes Task Force is investigating a rock-throwing incident at an Upper East Side Jewish school, police said Friday.

It happened around 9:20 p.m. Wednesday at The Ramaz Middle School on East 85th Street between Lexington and Park avenues — the same night as the anniversary of Kristallnacht, or "the Night of Broken Glass," a significant pogrom during the Holocaust.

Police said a man was seen taking a rock from his backpack and throwing it at the school's front glass window. He returned a short time later and threw another rock at another glass window.

Joseph Slatnick, a Jewish tourist from Israel, said he feels like a target wearing a yarmulke.

"I come here once or twice a year. I used to feel totally comfortable, and recently I'm feeling less comfortable," he said. "And I really want things to go back to the way they used to be."

Gov. Kathy Hochul blasted the attack on Twitter Friday, calling it "reprehensible."

On Tuesday night, a kosher pizza shop a few blocks away on Lexington Avenue had its glass front door smashed in. The suspects stole $1800 from the cash register.

However, police said the incidents are not connected.
