NEW YORK (1010 WINS) -- Police are searching for a man who tried to rape a woman on an Upper West Side subway train before she was able to escape with the help of a good Samaritan on Sunday night.

The NYPD released surveillance images Tuesday of the suspect in the attack aboard a southbound 2 train.

Police believe the man followed the 18-year-old victim onto the train at the 125th Street station in Harlem around 10 p.m.

As the train was approaching the 72nd Street stop on the Upper West Side, the man exposed himself to the woman, police said.

He then tried to pull her pants down, according to police.

A good Samaritan intervened during the attack and helped the woman escape to another train car.

Her attacker remained on the train for several stops and eventually got off at the Times Square–42nd Street station, police said.

He was last seen at the Times Square station carrying a McDonald’s bag and a drink.

The victim was transported by private means to NYC Health + Hospitals/Kings County, where she underwent treatment and a medical evaluation.

Anyone with information is asked to call Crime Stoppers at 1-800-577-TIPS.
