NEW YORK (1010 WINS) — The man who allegedly set fire to a woman in Brooklyn last year went on a murderous rampage after prosecutors say the victim destroyed his comic books and video game console.
Lashawn Duffie, 28, is being held on bail after being arraigned in Brooklyn Criminal Court on murder and kidnapping charges Wednesday for Surgerys Ramirez's killing on Nov. 11.
Prosecutors said that the deadly dispute started outside Ramirez’s apartment building on Van Siclen Avenue near Fulton Street in Cypress Hills when Duffie approached the 40-year-old about destroying his belongings sometime earlier, the Daily News reported.
Duffie was also angry with Ramirez because she "slept around," according to prosecutors. The two reportedly had a previous relationship, but the details remain unknown.
The 28-year-old beat up Ramirez's friend, who was standing with her outside the building, and stole $800 from him, prosecutors said. Duffie then went to a nearby bodega, where he was reportedly caught on camera buying lighter fluid, a lighter and twine.
Prosecutors allege he returned to her building, beat up Ramirez, tied her to a chair and poured accelerant on her. He then lit a match and left the woman to burn alive inside the apartment.
A witness told police that he observed her tied up and Duffie dousing her with lighter fluid, but he left without stopping Duffie, they added.
Ramirez died as a result of severe burns and homicidal violence, according to the city Medical Examiner.
Duffie is being held on a $500,000 cash bail or a $1 million bond, which he did not post.
