NEW YORK (1010 WINS) -- A man’s mangled body was found at the bottom of a garbage chute in Brooklyn early Friday morning, police said.

The man, believed to be in his 50s, was found dead around 4 a.m. in a dumpster after going down the chute and getting crushed by a trash compactor at the Medgar Evers Apartments on Gates Avenue in Bedford-Stuyvesant.

Residents heard loud noises and screams overnight and called police, leading to the grisly discovery.

The man’s body was crushed into pieces by the compactor, according to police.

The medical examiner may need to get involved to help figure out who he is, as no identification was found on him.

Investigators don’t believe he was a resident of the building, and it's not clear what he was doing there.

The investigation is ongoing, but it doesn’t appear any criminality led up to him going down the chute, police said.

Police tape was still up outside the building Friday morning as investigators looked over surveillance video.
