Police said they received a call from fire department personnel Saturday morning who were assisting the resident of a home on Churchill Street, in Fairfield, who was suffering a medical emergency.

They arrived to find the home filled with animal waste and more than 80 cats, chicken, geese, turkeys and ducks.

"Upon arrival to the scene, officers entered the home and found its interior to be in a state of squalor with animal waste throughout," the Fairfield Police Department said in a statement.

"Based on the condition of the house, police believe this was a hoarding situation," the department added.

Animal control officers from Fairfield, Westport, Bridgeport and Trumbull removed the animals from the home and brought them to animal shelters for evaluation.

Officers were filmed carrying crates and crates of animals out of the home Saturday.

The home’s resident was taken to a hospital for treatment. The Fairfield Police and Fairfield Animal Control are currently investigating.

The Associated Press contributed to this report.
