NEW YORK (1010 WINS) -- The MTA is joining hip-hop's 50th anniversary party, vending limited edition MetroCards themed after some of NYC's most legendary rappers.

Right now, the MTA is selling 40,000 new MetroCards at three select subway stations in Queens and Brooklyn, in tribute to the rappers who grew up there. These cards are going on a "first-come, first-serve" basis.

Commuters along the E, F, M, and R subway lines can stop at the vending machines at Queens' Forest Hills-71st Avenue station, and get a MetroCard themed after Queens-raised rapper LL Cool J.

A MetroCard exclusively sold at Brooklyn's Canarsie-Rockaway Parkway and New Lots Avenue stations honors the late Pop Smoke, who brought Brooklyn drill back to the forefront of East Coast hip-hop culture in 2019.

The MTA also plans to sell another batch of 40,000 MetroCards, featuring Long Island's own Rakim and East Harlem's own Cam'ron, later this month. These cards, they say, will be sold across every subway station on the grid.

Hip-hop had its roots in the Bronx in 1973, and New York City has led the way in celebrating rap music fifty years later.
