NEW YORK (1010 WINS) — The MTA plans to phase out its retro orange and yellow “conversational” seating as it replaces train cars with updated models.
The L-shaped seating arrangement in which two seats protruding into the car’s standing area face three seats situated along the wall of the train will be phased out gradually through 2028 as the older train model is replaced with 640 “futuristic” cars.
The new cars are part of a $1.7 billion investment in updating subway infrastructure.
The conversational seating dates back to the 1970s and is used on the B, D, N and Q lines.
The cars that have them are outdated and break down at twice the rate that more modern cars do, according to the MTA.
The new trains will have an updated version of the seating that most modern New York City subway cars use — blue benches along the walls of the cars with folding benches and extra standing space at the ends.
