NEW YORK (1010 WINS) — Three people were critically injured on Monday afternoon after a taxi plowed into a cyclist and pedestrians in Manhattan, prompting a dramatic rescue attempt by good Samaritans, authorities said.

Police said the incident happened just before 1 p.m. on Broadway near West 29th Street in the Flatiron District.

In total, six people were taken to Bellevue Hospital. Three are in critical condition, while three others, including the driver who stayed at the scene, have non-life-threatening injuries.

NYPD Deputy Chief John Chell said the cab was westbound on 29th Street when it turned left onto Broadway and collided with a cyclist.

Based on video evidence, the cab slowed as it continued to veer to the left and jump the sidewalk, Chell said.

The vehicle then seemed to speed up, striking two women and pinning them against a wall outside a Black Seed Bagel shop.

About 15 to 20 people attempted to lift the cab off of the women, Chell added, calling it "a remarkable scene."

Chell said officials believe the crash was an accident at this time.

A representative for Black Seed Bagels told The New York Post that the shop is "working closely with the NYPD and DOT in their investigation to determine the cause of the crash."

The NYPD urged people to avoid the area as an investigation into the incident is ongoing.
