NEW YORK (1010 WINS) -- An NYPD officer was slashed in the hand and a suspect was shot twice during a confrontation in Coney Island on Thursday afternoon, police said.

The violence unfolded on W. 8th Street, between Neptune and Surf avenues, near the 60th precinct, just before 1 p.m.
NYPD Commissioner Keechant Sewell said a uniformed officer from the nearby 60th precinct saw the suspect wearing thick red gloves and armed with two knives.
One knife is 16 inches long with an 11-inch blade, while the other is about 6 inches long and has a fixed blade.
Sewell said the 57-year-old suspect, from Brooklyn, was standing outside of a silver SVU, blocking traffic on W. 8th Street.
As the officer began to approach the suspect, he rushed toward the officer with one of the knives raised. The officer tactically repositioned and put distance between himself and the armed man.
Additional uniformed officers were walking on W. 8th Street and were alerted about the incident by community members and quickly responded.
As the officers arrived, the suspect began to advance on them, Sewell said.
One officer ordered him multiple times to drop the knives, but to no avail. He kept charging towards the officers, and one of them fired four times, striking him in the leg and shoulder.
He fell to the ground, but continued to put up a fight with officers, refusing to release his grip on one of the knives, Sewell said.
In the "intense prolonged struggle," a 6-year veteran of the force was sliced on the hand. Earlier, police said the officer was stabbed.

The suspect was taken to an area hospital in custody, where he was described as stable. The officer was also taken to a hospital for treatment and was discharged a few hours later.
"Relieved to see our 60th precinct brother leaving Coney Island Hospital, bandaged but in good spirits," wrote the Police Benevolent Association on Twitter.

The incident was captured by multiple sources of video, including body camera footage, and the motive remains unclear at this time, Sewell said.
"I have to commend the actions of these brave officers," she added.
An investigation remains ongoing.
Citizen App video showed officers near what appears to be a pool of blood on the street as a police helicopter flies overhead.
The NYPD urged people to avoid the area amid a heavy emergency presence.
“Expect emergency vehicles in the surrounding area, and use alternate routes when traveling in this area,” the department tweeted.
