Four officers were in an unmarked police car on Dyckman and Nagle Streets in Washington Heights when they saw a dispute happening around 3 a.m., police said.

The officers got out of the vehicle and saw a man in the crowd with a gun and allegedly yelled him repeatedly to drop his gun but he did not. Officials said the four officers then began to shoot at the armed man.
The 29-year-old victim was struck throughout his body as was another man involved in the dispute. Both were taken to local hospitals where the 29-year-old died from the gunshot wounds, according to the NYPD.
The officers involved in the shooting were also taken to the hospital to be treated for tinnitus and other minor injuries.

Police are still investigating what the cause of the initial dispute was as well as the officers’ involvement in the shooting. A firearm was recovered at the scene. Cops added that the man had prior police contact and he was currently on parole.
