NEW YORK (1010 WINS) -- An off-duty NYPD detective and a gunman in a ski mask shot at each other in Queens on Tuesday morning, but it didn’t appear either was struck by gunfire.
It all started around 2:15 a.m. when the off-duty detective approached a “suspicious” man at 232nd Street and Lansing Avenue in Brookville, police said.
The exact circumstances leading up to the encounter weren't immediately known, but police said the detective believed the man was armed with a gun.
As the detective approached, the man turned around and shot at him, according to police, who said the detective returned fire.
The detective wasn’t wounded in the exchange, and police don’t believe the gunman was shot either.
The detective was taken to an area hospital to be treated for ringing in the ears.
The suspect fled the area on foot, dropping the gun as he took off, police said. He was wearing a gray sweatshirt and a ski mask.
No arrests had been reported as of Tuesday.
