NEW YORK (1010 WINS) — Plainclothes police officers shot and killed a man on Thursday after he shot at another man who had stabbed him in a Bronx bodega, Chief of Detectives James Essig said at a press conference.
Three members of the Queens Warrant Squad were investigating an unrelated incident around 11:30 a.m. at the corner of East Gun Hill Road and Hull Avenue when they saw a 29-year-old man enter the Luncheon Fountain deli, according to police.
Security footage allegedly shows the man got in a fight with a 21-year-old man in which he stabbed him with a knife.
The man with the knife fled the deli, and the 21-year-old chased after him with a gun, officials said.
The man with the gun fired into the 29-year-old’s white Lexus at point blank range, grazing the knife wielding attacker in the head, according to authorities.
It was at that point two NYPD detectives opened fire at the man with the gun, firing a total of 12 shots, police claim.
The man was brought to NYC Health + Hospitals/Jacobi, where he was pronounced dead.
Officers later found the 29-year-old with a graze wound to his head in a barbershop, according to police.
Emergency responders brought him to St. Barnabas Hospital in stable condition.
Officers said they recovered a gun on the scene, and no bystanders were injured in the fight.
The NYPD said investigators don’t yet know the motive, and that the investigation into the incident is ongoing.
