Pedestrian fatally struck by box truck in Midtown

NEW YORK (1010 WINS) -- A pedestrian was struck and killed by a box truck in Midtown Manhattan late Thursday morning, police said.

The victim was run over by the construction truck just after 11:30 a.m. at W. 44th Street and Eighth Avenue, the FDNY said.

Firefighters extricated the victim, who was pinned by the vehicle.

The victim and a second patient were rushed to Lenox Health Greenwich Village, where the former was pronounced dead. The second person's condition wasn't immediately known.

The deceased, who hasn't yet been identified, was reportedly a man in his 40s.

The truck driver remained at the scene and had not been charged as of Thursday afternoon.

Police couldn’t immediately confirm reports that the emergency response was delayed because of a traffic pattern change.

Police tape was up at the intersection as the investigation continued into the afternoon. Drivers were being diverted two blocks south at Eighth Avenue and W. 42nd Street.
