Recovery effort to begin for missing swimmer off Far Rockaway

NEW YORK (1010 WINS) -- A recovery effort was set to begin Monday morning for a swimmer who went missing in the waters off Far Rockaway overnight.

A 25-year-old man went for a swim at 1:45 a.m. and never returned, the FDNY said.

Rescue crews were seen scouring in the dark near Seagirt Boulevard and Beach 9th Street early Monday, but the search was unsuccessful.

A recovery effort will begin at 10 a.m., according to the FDNY, which said the search is no longer considered a rescue effort.

Authorities believe the man may have been swept away by the current towards Nassau County.
