The victim was inside of a church at 25-36 37th Street in Astoria when a man stole her wallet from the bench she was sitting on around 5 p.m., police said.
When the woman noticed her wallet was missing, she left the church and spotted the thief with her wallet in his pocket, according to officials.
When she confronted him and tried to get the wallet back, he slapped her hand and broke her index finger before fleeing the scene, cops said.
Inside the wallet was about $30 cash and credit cards. The victim refused medical attention at the scene but later went to an Urgent Care in the Bronx for treatment.
The thief is described as having a medium complexion, medium build, about 5'9" tall with brown short hair and last seen wearing a black t-shirt, black jacket, blue jeans, gray sneakers, eyeglasses and seen carrying a red wallet.
