The violent altercation happened around 1 a.m. when the victim woke up to a noise in her living room. The 50-year-old man attacked her as she was going to investigate the noise.
According to police, as the victim was being treated at a nearby hospital, it was discovered that she had a dislocated jaw and that several pieces of clothing were missing.
Detectives from the Special Victims Division quickly arrested Thomas Johnson, a Level 3 sex offender.
Johnson has nine prior arrests, including ones for strangulation in August 2021, assault in March 2003, attempted murder in June 1995 — for which he pleaded guilty to assault — grand larceny in February 1994 and sexual abuse of a 5-year-old girl in August 2006. He pleaded guilty to that sexual assault and served one year in prison.
A search warrant was obtained by investigators for both his apartment and for him, and they recovered a bloody T-shirt and his bloody clothing.
Police said he is charged with second-degree assault on an elderly female over the age of 65, strangulation and burglary.
According to NYPD Chief of Detectives James Essig, who called the alleged crimes "despicable," more charges may be filed.
