NEW YORK (1010 WINS) — An SUV driver was arrested for fatally striking a 7-year-old girl just steps from her home after running through an Astoria stop sign, police said Tuesday.

Claudia Mendez-Vasquez, 46, was driving a Ford Explorer on Feb. 17 when she failed to come to a complete stop at Newtown Road and 45th Street and struck Naadhun Dolma.

It wasn't immediately clear if Dolma, who police say lived a few houses down from the intersection, was walking inside a crosswalk when she was struck.

Officers responding to the scene picked up the girl and rushed her to NYC Health & Hospitals/Elmhurst, where she was pronounced dead.

Mendez-Vasquez remained at the scene and has now been charged with criminally negligent homicide.
