YAPHANK, N.Y (1010 WINS/WCBS 880) -- A mother and her infant daughter were killed when the car they were in collided with a mini school bus in Suffolk County on Thursday morning, police said.

The two vehicles crashed around 7:35 a.m. in Yaphank at County Route 101 and the Long Island Expressway south service road.

The force of the collision overturned the school bus and mangled the black Nissan Sentra that the mother and infant were in.

The mother, whom police identified Thursday evening as 31-year-old Jacklyn Smolian, died instantly in the crash, according to police.

In the moments after the crash, a passerby stopped to pull the girl out of her car seat and a responding officer soon performed CPR on her.

Joelaya Smolian-Davenport, her 1-year-old daughter, who was in a backseat car seat, was taken to Long Island Community Hospital in Patchogue and then moved to Stony Brook University Hospital, where she was pronounced dead.

The bus driver, Jose Ducos, 73, and the bus's matron, Aria Mingo, 61, were both hospitalized with non-life threatening injuries that included broken bones.

While it was raining at the time of the crash, it's unclear if weather played a role at all.

Suffolk County Police Commissioner Rodney Harrison told 1010 WINS that an investigation into the cause is ongoing.

The deadly collision came just hours after police said a drunk driver went the wrong way down a road in Nassau County and caused a multi-vehicle crash that killed two boys and injured four people.
