The two victims were pronounced dead at the scene after police made the gruesome discovery while responding to a 911 call around 2 a.m. at 54th Street and Sixth Avenue in Sunset Park.
A neighbor called police after hearing “a commotion emanating” from an apartment on the fourth floor.
Officers gained entry to the residence and found a 61-year-old woman lying unresponsive on a hallway floor with multiple lacerations to her head, neck and upper body.
A 52-year-old man was discovered on the ground outside the apartment building. He was also unresponsive and had traumatic injuries consistent with a fall from a high elevation.
A knife was recovered near the man’s body, police said.
The medical examiner's office will determine what killed them.
Police believe it’s a case of murder-suicide, but they said an investigation is ongoing.
Both of them lived at the apartment, and there's a history of domestic violence between them, according to police.
