NEW YORK (1010 WINS/WCBS 880) -- A Long Island man died in a chain-reaction crash Tuesday night as he tried to pass a van, Suffolk County police said.

Isaiah Santos Rubio, 20, was driving a 1995 Honda Civic eastbound on Pine Aire Drive in North Bay Shore just after 10 p.m. when he attempted to pass a 2006 Ford van at Peck Avenue.

As he was passing to the right of the van, Rubio struck the curb and then hit the van, police said. His car went off the road and crashed into a sign and a utility pole.

Rubio was ejected from the car during the collision, according to police.

He was rushed to South Shore University Hospital in Bay Shore, but he didn't survive.

A passenger in the Honda and two passengers in the Ford were taken to the same hospital with minor injuries. They were released overnight.

Police impounded both vehicles for safety checks and are asking anyone with information on the crash to contact the Major Case Unit at 631-852-6553.
