COMMACK, N.Y. (1010 WINS) — A 63-year-old man was fatally struck by an SUV while walking on Veterans Memorial Highway Wednesday night, police said.
Julio Monteiro was walking south on the highway just east of Jericho Turnpike in Commack around 10:39 p.m. when he was hit by a westbound 2015 Kia Soul.
Monteiro, of Valley Stream, was pronounced dead at St. Catherine of Siena Medical Center in Smithtown, police said.
The driver, who remained at the crash site, was not injured, police said. It wasn't immediately clear if charges would be filed.
Police said the Kia was impounded for a safety check.
It's the second fatal crash on the highway in less than a month.
