PERTH AMBOY, N.J. (1010 WINS) — Officials in New Jersey charged a man for killing his girlfriend’s 2-year-old daughter, while the girl's mother is accused of keeping it quiet for three years, Middlesex County Prosecutor Yolanda Ciccone announced on Tuesday.

According to Ciccone, 29-year-old Matthew Chiles, was arrested on Monday along with the mother of the child, 27-year-old Monique Durham, in connection with the child's death.

On July 26, authorities asked the Division of Child Protection and Permanency to conduct a welfare check on Durham’s 5-year-old twin daughters, and it was determined that one of the girls had been missing since 2019, officials said.

Further investigation determined that family and friends of Durham hadn’t seen the child since 2019.

Chiles allegedly engaged in conduct related to the child’s death and then disposed of her remains, prosecutors said.

He was charged with first-degree murder, desecration of human remains and endangering the welfare of a child, officials said.

Durham faces two counts of endangering the welfare of a child and one count of theft, prosecutor’s added.

Chile and Durham are both being held at Middlesex County Adult Correctional Center pending a detention hearing.
