PATERSON, N.J. (1010 WINS) -- Police charged a Florida man that allegedly crashed a stolen car that left one man dead and injured five others in New Jersey on Tuesday, authorities said.
According to officials, 31-year-old Harold Rasbin of Orlando, Florida was charged with first-degree aggravated manslaughter, first-degree death by auto, first-degree leaving the scene of a fatal motor vehicle collision, along with 10 counts of second-degree aggravated assault, multiple counts of theft, endangering and several traffic violations.
At around 3:15 p.m., police said Rasbin was near the intersection of Main and Market streets when he lost control of a stolen Honda CRV that struck a police car and another vehicle before colliding with pedestrians, according to Passaic County Prosecutor Camelia M. Valdes and Paterson Police Chief Ibrahim Baycora.
The vehicle came to a stop after it hit a light pole outside of 227 Main Street, officials added.
Rasbin got out of the vehicle and ran from police, but was arrested after a short chase, authorities said.
“Rasbin was driving a Honda CRV and struck an occupied police vehicle that was pulled over on the side of the road at the time,” the prosecutor and police chief said in the statement.
“Rasbin then sped away and collided with another vehicle in the intersection of Main and Market Streets, lost control of the vehicle, and struck several pedestrians,” the statement said.
The SUV came to a stop when it was disabled after it struck a utility pole on Main St. near Ellison Ave., authorities said.
One person was pronounced dead at the scene and five others were taken to St. Joseph’s University Medical Center with serious injuries.
If convicted, Rasbin could face decades in prison. He is currently being held pending a detention hearing scheduled for next week, authorities said.
