NEW YORK (1010 WINS) -- Two firefighters were injured early Wednesday as the FDNY battled a five-alarm fire at factory buildings on the Brooklyn waterfront.
The inferno consumed a two-story factory building at 53rd Street and First Avenue in Sunset Park before spreading to two nearby industrial buildings. Plumes of smoke and the glow of flames was visible all around.
FDNY Chief of Operations Kevin Woods said multiple fireboats were involved in fighting the fire, which started after midnight.
“At one point, we were using approximately 15,000 gallons a minute of water on this fire,” Woods said.
The two firefighters suffered minor injuries, mainly smoke inhalation, in the “heavy, heavy fire,” he said.
All three buildings were destroyed in the fire, according to Woods: “There is extensive, extensive damage to these buildings... just complete losses.”
In total, more than 250 fire and EMS personnel responded in the middle of the night to the fire. The cause is still under investigation.
