Armed suspect shot by police, critically injured in the Bronx: NYPD

NEW YORK (1010 WINS) — An armed man was shot and critically injured Sunday afternoon during a standoff with police after they say he assaulted a 63-year-old woman in the Bronx.

According NYPD Chief of Patrol John Chell, the woman was assaulted by the 49-year-old man at East 153rd Street and Concourse Village West around 2:20 p.m.

The woman approached uniformed officers at the Mott Haven Campus School to report what happened to her.

Five police officers caught up to the man, and he refused to stop, Chell said. As the officers pursued him, he displayed a firearm and pointed it at a passerby.

The officers gave repeated instructions to drop the weapon.

At that point, they reached East 153rd Street and Grand Concourse, and the suspect continued to refuse their commands.

"He puts the weapon to his head and then rapidly turns on our officers," Chell said. "Our officers discharged their firearms, striking the individual."

They rendered him aid and took him into custody. His identity has not been released at this time.

Police recovered his gun at the scene.

The man and woman were hospitalized, Chell said.

An investigation is ongoing.

The shooting came just a day after an off-duty officer was shot in the head during an attempted robbery in Brooklyn.
