TRENTON, N.J. (1010 WINS) — A new bill proposed by three Democratic New Jersey legislators would require adults in the state to wear a helmet while riding bikes, scooters, skateboards and roller skates.

Many states, including New Jersey, require children to wear helmets, but, if signed into law, New Jersey would be the first state in the country to require the same of adults.

New Jersey was the first state to require children under 14 wear helmets while riding bikes in 1992. In 2005, the state extended that requirement to anyone under 17.

The bill is sponsored by Reginald Atkins, William Spearman and Annette Chaparro.
